DaysofPal – A recently released Palestinian detainee has said that he witnessed Israeli prison guards fatally assault a Palestinian prisoner from Gaza inside an Israeli detention facility, describing the brutal killing that unfolded before his eyes.
Ayham Kammamji, who was released in a recent prisoner exchange and deported to Egypt, said he saw prisoner Mohammed Sharif Rizq Al-Asli die after being taken into the prison clinic at Ashkelon Prison—a place detainees refer to as “the slaughterhouse.”
In a video testimony shared on social media, Kammamji said Al-Asli entered the clinic walking on his own feet but emerged minutes later on a stretcher.
“I saw him walk into the clinic. Minutes later, he was carried out, and shortly afterward they announced he was dead,” Kammamji said.
Held in solitary confinement at the time, Kammamji said he heard screams, insults, and violent commotion outside his cell. Looking through a narrow opening in the wall, he said he witnessed several guards dragging and savagely beating a detainee before forcing him into the clinic.
“They dragged him brutally into the clinic,” he recalled. “Less than fifteen minutes later, I heard celebrations, congratulations, and people patting each other on the back.”
According to Kammamji, senior prison officials and security personnel gathered afterward to congratulate the guard involved.
“They were telling him, ‘You are a hero,'” he claimed.
Kammamji said the incident was not an isolated case but one of many abuses he witnessed, describing the treatment of prisoners from Gaza as “beyond imagination.” He added that dozens of Palestinian detainees have died in Israeli custody in recent years, saying many of those deaths have received little international attention.
Since his release, Kammamji has used social media to document conditions inside Israeli prisons, sharing testimonies about severe beatings, food deprivation, psychological abuse, and the treatment of Palestinian detainees.
In another testimony alongside former detainee Maher Al-Hashlamoun, he described the daily struggle for survival inside prison.
“We even had to fight for a piece of bread. Our bodies grew weak, but our spirit remained strong,” he said.
According to the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, at least 90 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli custody since October 7, 2023, with the commission attributing many of the deaths to torture and abuse. Thousands of Palestinians from Gaza have reportedly been detained during the war, with many held under conditions of enforced disappearance.
