Displaced Palestinians in Al-Mawasi ‘Smelling Grief and Death’ Amid Dire Conditions

DaysofPal- Hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians crammed into makeshift tents in al-Mawasi, a coastal strip designated by the Israeli occupation forces as a “humanitarian zone,” are facing appalling living conditions and fear being forced further south toward the Egyptian border.

The overcrowded encampment, described by aid agencies as “saturated” and incapable of safely absorbing more people, lacks access to clean water, sanitation, and basic medical services. Humanitarian organizations warn of imminent risks of disease, malnutrition, and worsening displacement crises.

“This is not life. We cannot do it anymore,” said Shade al-Wawi, a displaced Palestinian now sheltering in al-Mawasi after his home was flattened for the second time since 2004.

“We are smelling dust, and with it, smelling grief and death.” Al-Wawi added.

Residents fear that Israeli occupation forces’ pressure may soon push them even further south toward Rafah and the Egyptian border, a move that could prove catastrophic for already exhausted and vulnerable families.

“We are no longer able even to stay here,” al-Wawi said.

“We’ll be forced to move south … The entire world is not listening. We are not heard, we are not seen, we are not living, without any future – our God is our only shield.” Added.

Despite being labeled a safe area, al-Mawasi has previously been struck by Israeli air raids that killed dozens, fueling distrust among displaced Palestinians.

Aid agencies stress that the area is neither safe nor adequately resourced to function as a humanitarian refuge.

International organizations, including the United Nations, have called for an immediate halt to mass evacuations into unprotected zones, the protection of civilians, and the establishment of secure, sustainable humanitarian access across the Gaza Strip.
