DaysofPal- The United Nations declared on Friday that famine has officially gripped Gaza, with over half a million Palestinians already suffering from extreme hunger as Israel’s relentless military campaign continues.
In a joint statement, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that Israel’s intensified attacks on Gaza City would bring “additional devastating consequences for civilians.”
The warning followed the confirmation by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) network that famine conditions existed in Gaza and projected that the crisis would spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by late September if the situation remained unchanged.
According to the report, more than 500,000 people are now in “Phase 5,” the highest and deadliest level of food insecurity, while another 1.07 million, over half the population are enduring “Phase 4” emergency hunger levels.
UN agencies emphasized that only an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian aid can prevent even more Palestinian deaths from starvation and malnutrition.
Despite the growing humanitarian catastrophe, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to approve a full takeover of Gaza City while continuing talks with Hamas over the release of remaining hostages.
