On Nakba Anniversary, Israeli strikes kill Dozens of women and children in Gaza

DaysofPal- In a recent round of Israeli attacks throughout the Gaza Strip, more than 103 Palestinians, mostly women and children, were killed, adding to the already devastating death toll from 19 months of nonstop bombardment. This comes as Palestinians mark the 77th anniversary of the Nakba, or catastrophe, when more than 750,000 Palestinians were forcibly expelled by Zionist militias during the creation of Israel in 1948.

At least 57 people were killed overnight and into Thursday during a barrage of strikes on Khan Younis in southern Gaza, according to local health officials. Medical staff at Nasser Medical Complex reported a flood of casualties, many of them children.

A journalist reporting from Deir al-Balah described “another bloody day” in Gaza, highlighting the intensification of air strikes on residential neighborhoods. “Israeli warplanes directly targeted nine houses without any warning in the city of Khan Younis,” he said. “Entire families were completely wiped out.”

The atmosphere on the ground was described as chaotic, with repeated forced evacuation orders driving civilians from their homes. “The Israeli military targeted civilians while they were asleep,” the reporter added, citing 13 airstrikes on the Jabalia refugee camp and nearby areas. Civil defense teams are said to be overwhelmed, lacking the equipment necessary to rescue those buried under the rubble.

“These strikes reflect a pattern of attacks not aimed at military targets, but at systematically destroying Gaza’s social fabric,” the journalist concluded.

The latest attacks have triggered another wave of displacement, with thousands fleeing Gaza City after sudden evacuation orders were issued. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as residents rushed to gather what belongings they could.

“We’re seeing families carrying their belongings and taking to the streets,” one correspondent noted. “The children and elderly are carrying whatever they’re able to carry … They don’t know where to go. There is no safe place for these people – the so-called shelters have already been destroyed by Israeli bombs.”

Displaced Palestinian Hasan Moqbel described the ongoing assault as a war on civilians. “They have been bombing Gaza for 19 months. What’s left in Gaza? Innocent children are dying. There is no armed activity here. Most of them are elderly people who are dying,” he said.

On Nakba Day, fears of an expanded Israeli ground operation are rising. “People are deeply worried,” said a reporter from central Gaza. “They believe the Israeli army may force them to flee again to new areas where conditions are even worse.” Despite active diplomatic efforts, he added, “There is no sign of a slowdown on the ground.”

International Reactions and Diplomatic Efforts

There is still diplomatic activity in the area despite the violence. During a visit to Qatar, President Donald Trump was urged to leverage U.S. influence to secure a ceasefire.

“Our teams are engaged in intensive diplomacy to secure a ceasefire in Gaza to protect all civilians, especially innocent women and children, and ensure the release of all hostages,” Qatar’s emir said during a state dinner. “This conflict is the key to wider stability in the region. From the West Bank to Yemen to Lebanon, and time is short.”

Calling on the U.S. to take the lead, the emir emphasized, “Your involvement could catalyze a breakthrough where others have stalled. But only if done in concert with serious partners … The United States brings power, leverage, and global weight. If we act together, we have a real shot at ending the bloodshed and restoring regional confidence.”

President Trump reiterated a radical vision for Gaza’s future, suggesting American control of the territory. “I have concepts for Gaza that I think are very good: make it a freedom zone, let the United States get involved, and make it just a freedom zone,” he said. “I’d be proud to have the United States have it, take it, make it a freedom zone.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East expressed optimism regarding a potential breakthrough. When asked whether a deal would address humanitarian aid, a ceasefire, or both, the envoy replied, “All of it. I’m positive about all that.”

Escalation in the West Bank

As Gaza continues to suffer under relentless attack, attention is also turning to the occupied West Bank, where a new phase of Israeli military operations appears to be taking shape. In a highly controversial statement, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared, “Just as we are flattening Rafah, Khan Younis, and Gaza, we have to flatten the terror hubs,” specifically referencing the Palestinian village of Bruqin following the death of an Israeli settler.

At dawn on Thursday, Israeli forces carried out raids across several West Bank cities and refugee camps, including Tubas, Nablus, Bethlehem, and Dura. Residents in areas such as Qalandia, Ya’bad, Fawwar, and Askar reported house raids, arrests, and what human rights groups describe as systematic abuse.
