DaysofPal- A senior Hamas official confirmed that the group had received a new ceasefire proposal from Egypt but noted that Cairo made it clear no agreement with Israel would be possible unless Hamas agrees to lay down its arms.
“Our negotiating delegation was surprised that the proposal Egypt conveyed included an explicit text regarding the disarmament of the resistance,” the official said. “Egypt informed us that there will be no agreement to stop the war without negotiating the disarmament of the resistance.”
The official emphasized that Hamas’s position remains unchanged: any agreement must be based on ending Israel’s war on Gaza and ensuring the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian territory. Hamas considers its weapons a non-negotiable issue, stating they are “not subject to discussion.”
Israel, for its part, has consistently maintained that defeating Hamas, including its full disarmament, is essential for ending the war.
The Egyptian proposal also outlines a 45-day ceasefire, during which humanitarian aid, including food and shelter materials, would be allowed into Gaza. The enclave has been facing a deepening humanitarian crisis since Israel halted all aid entry in early March, raising international alarm over looming starvation.
The senior Hamas official adds that the proposal by Egypt includes a ceasefire for 45 days in exchange for the entry of food and materials for shelter into Gaza.
The negotiating delegation, headed by Hamas chief Khalil al-Haya, held several meetings in Cairo on Sunday with Egyptian officials in charge of the negotiations, with Qatari officials also participating.
Cairo and Doha, the mediators in the truce negotiations, are seeking to bring Hamas and Israel closer together to end Israel’s genocidal war on the Palestinian Gaza Strip and stabilize the ceasefire.
Earlier, Hamas leader Taher al-Nunu said that the movement is ready to release all Israeli prisoners held in Gaza in exchange for a serious exchange deal, a ceasefire, and an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
“We are ready to release all Israeli prisoners in exchange for a serious exchange deal, a cessation of the war, an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the entry of aid,” said al-Nunu, who is a media advisor to the head of Hamas’ political bureau.
