Gaza Health Sector at Imminent Collapse Amidst Escalating Israeli Genocide

DaysofPal- The Director-General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Munir Al-Borsh , has issued a chilling warning about the rapidly deteriorating health situation in the besieged enclave.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Al-Borsh emphasized that the healthcare system in Gaza is on the verge of total collapse, with hospitals grappling with severe shortages of essential medical supplies and fuel needed to sustain life-saving operations.

“The continuation of this catastrophic situation threatens to turn patients’ lives into a real tragedy with every passing moment,” Al-Borsh said. He highlighted that approximately 80% of patients in Gaza are unable to access the medications required for their treatment, placing their lives at grave risk daily. The dire circumstances have created what he described as an “unprecedented humanitarian disaster,” leaving thousands of vulnerable individuals, including children, women, and the elderly, without adequate care.

A Growing Humanitarian Catastrophe

The health crisis in Gaza has been compounded by relentless Israeli military attacks, which resumed on March 18 after a brief ceasefire. In just nine days, these attacks have claimed the lives of 830 Palestinians and left 1,787 others injured, according to figures released by the Ministry of Health. Since October 7, 2023, when the war began, the death toll has soared to 50,183 martyrs, with over 113,828 people wounded.

Amidst the Israeli genocidal war, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor reported that Israeli occupation has been killing an average of 103 Palestinians per day since resuming its genocidal campaign earlier this month.

Artillery shelling, airstrikes, and drone strikes have devastated civilian infrastructure, displacing over 200,000 people within a week while thousands more remain in limbo, searching for safe refuge amidst widespread insecurity.

One particularly harrowing consequence of the crisis is the staggering number of amputations recorded in Gaza. Al-Borsh revealed that more than 4,500 amputations have occurred due to injuries sustained during the conflict, including 800 children and 540 women. These figures underscore the scale of suffering endured by civilians who lack access to even the most basic medical services.

Fuel Shortages Threaten Critical Care

Compounding the challenges facing Gaza’s healthcare system is the acute shortage of fuel needed to power hospital generators. Al-Borsh warned that existing fuel reserves will only last for 10 more days . If supplies run out, it would spell disaster for patients in intensive care units (ICUs), many of whom rely on ventilators and other life-support systems powered by generators. The potential shutdown of these machines could result in mass casualties among critically ill patients, further deepening the humanitarian catastrophe.

Healthcare Under Siege

For nearly six months, Gaza’s hospitals have operated under unimaginable strain, enduring relentless bombardments and dwindling resources. Medical staff work tirelessly despite overwhelming odds, often performing surgeries and treating patients without electricity or proper equipment. Yet, the resilience of these healthcare workers is being pushed to its breaking point as the occupation continues to target civilian areas, destroying clinics, ambulances, and vital infrastructure.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, 39 martyrs and 124 wounded were brought to hospitals across Gaza in the past 24 hours alone. This steady influx of casualties has overwhelmed already stretched facilities, forcing doctors to make impossible decisions about who receives care—and who does not.

International Silence Fuels Suffering

Human rights organizations have condemned the international community’s muted response to the unfolding tragedy. The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor criticized Israel’s “genocidal campaign” of direct killings, accusing the occupation forces of deliberately targeting civilians and violating international law. Despite mounting evidence of atrocities, calls for accountability and intervention have largely gone unheeded.

“The world cannot continue to ignore the cries of the Palestinian people,” said one human rights advocate. “Every delay in addressing this crisis means more lives lost and more families torn apart.”

A Plea for Urgent Action

As Gaza teeters on the brink of complete collapse, Al-Borsh and other officials are pleading for urgent international intervention to save the health sector and protect innocent lives. Without immediate action to secure medical supplies, fuel, and humanitarian aid, the consequences will be catastrophic—not just for those currently seeking treatment but for future generations whose well-being depends on a functioning healthcare system.

For now, the people of Gaza endure another day of fear, pain, and uncertainty, clinging to hope in the face of unimaginable adversity. Their plight serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for peace, justice, and solidarity in the face of oppression.
