DayofPal– Released Palestinian prisoners have shared harrowing accounts of the persistent violations they endured under Israeli occupation, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.

Their testimonies showcases how life in detention looks like, with many recounting the physical and psychological toll of their imprisonment.

“We were almost fasting all the time, surviving on only a few bites of food,” said one former prisoner. “The rooms were dark, and our pre-dawn meal was eaten in total darkness. The food was undercooked and scarce,” he added.

Another released prisoner described the dramatic weight loss many suffered without adequate food: “We lost between 30 to 50 kilograms due to the deliberate policy of starvation.”

The inhumane conditions extended beyond food and physical torment. “We had access to water for ablution only for one hour a day,” another prisoner explained. “We didn’t even know what day it was. Time lost all meaning. We slept when the guards told us to and woke up to beatings and oppression at their will.”

The prisoners also spoke about the restrictions on their religious freedom they faced. “We were prevented from practicing our religious rituals, forbidden from reading the Quran aloud, and denied the chance to pray in congregation,” one former detainee revealed.

These testimonies underscore the enduring hardships faced by Palestinian prisoners, male or female, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

Meanwhile, recently released Palestinian female prisoners have also shared harrowing accounts of mistreatment and abuse in Israeli detention centers, during Ramadan.

One former prisoner recalled the extreme suffering they endured: “We were left for hours in the freezing cold, bound and exposed.”

Another described the brutal treatment inside the cells: “We were beaten and sprayed with gas for no reason.”

The women also spoke of degrading searches and verbal abuse. “We were subjected to humiliating strip searches, insults, and threats,” one detainee revealed.

Deprivation was a recurring form of punishment. “We were denied food, blankets, and even drinking water,” said another prisoner. “The prison authorities deliberately withheld medical care and refused to provide us with essential treatment.”

During Ramadan, the oppression intensified. “At suhoor, female guards stormed our rooms without reason and threw our food on the floor,” one woman recounted. “The food we were given was rotten, undercooked, and not fit for human consumption.”
