The world celebrates International Women’s Day with flowers and speeches, but in Gaza, women sift through the rubble of their homes, searching for the remnants of a life stolen by war.
They are widows, grieving mothers, and survivors of relentless attacks—bearing the unbearable as the world looks away.
More than 16 months into one of the deadliest wars in modern history, Palestinian women face a daily struggle for survival.
The war has not only taken their loved ones but has also rewritten their roles, forcing them to endure immense suffering while carrying the weight of an entire shattered society.
Shocking Figures
According to statistics released by Gaza’s Government Media Office on Saturday, Israeli forces have killed 12,316 Palestinian women since the beginning of the war.
Additionally, nearly 14,000 women have lost their husbands, leaving them as the sole providers for their families.
The figures also reveal that 17,000 mothers have lost their children, turning them into grieving survivors of the ongoing assault. At the same time, 50,000 pregnant women have been forced to give birth under extreme, inhumane conditions.
Beyond the death toll, the suffering persists. At least 162,000 women in Gaza have contracted infectious diseases due to dire living conditions, while 2,000 have lost limbs following Israeli airstrikes.
Scores of women remain imprisoned by Israeli forces, where they reportedly endure mistreatment and abuse.
Humanitarian Nightmare
Despite a ceasefire declared on January 19, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza remains dire. Women and children continue to suffer from severe food and water shortages, a collapsing healthcare system, and ongoing displacement under a suffocating blockade.
“The world must recognize that the Israeli occupation has deliberately targeted Palestinian women in this war of extermination, yet the international community remains silent,” the Gaza Government Media Office said in a statement.
The statement also highlighted the suffering of Palestinian women in the occupied West Bank, where relentless Israeli military raids have displaced thousands of families and led to the arrest and abuse of hundreds of women.
“The Palestinian woman is in dire need of protection and the right to live in dignity, rather than being subjected to murder, displacement, and imprisonment in full view of the world,” the office added, holding Israel fully responsible for the war crimes committed against them.
Calls for Justice
The media office called on the international community and women’s rights organizations to take urgent action to end the Israeli occupation and halt the systematic violence against Palestinian women.
Echoing these concerns, UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls Reem Alsalem accused Israel of using violence against Palestinian women as a tool of genocide.
In a statement last month, Alsalem noted that Israel’s attacks have deliberately targeted reproductive health, with an alarming 300% increase in miscarriages due to lack of medical care, psychological trauma, and relentless bombardment.
“This is not just genocide—it is the deliberate destruction of all legal and moral boundaries in war,” Alsalem stated, describing the situation in Gaza as unprecedented in modern history.
