DaysofPal- For nearly a week, Israel has imposed a total blockade on humanitarian aid entering Gaza, deepening an already dire crisis for its 2.3 million residents.
Food and fuel supplies are dwindling, while heavy rains and plunging temperatures make life unbearable for families sheltering in makeshift camps.
Israel has been imposing the blockade since March 2 in an apparent attempt to change the conditions of a proposed three-phase ceasefire deal with Hamas.
Each passing day without the entry of essential goods and fuel exacerbates the suffering of civilians, aid groups warn.
“Every single day that the crossings are not open, that goods and fuel are not entering the Gaza Strip, is a catastrophic day,” one aid worker stated. The entire population of Gaza is heavily dependent on food assistance, yet no supplies have arrived for a week.
The impact extends beyond food shortages, hospitals, water desalination plants, and road-clearing equipment, which are all paralyzed due to the fuel shortage.
The blockade also intensifies the tragedy of thousands still missing beneath the rubble. Reports indicate that at least 10,000 Palestinians remain unaccounted for, buried under debris from months of bombardment.
Families are unable to prepare meals even during the holy month of Ramadan because UN agencies and non-governmental organizations’ community kitchens are running low on food supplies.
Aid groups report that trucks carrying food, medical supplies, and shelter materials were scheduled to reach Gaza but were halted by Israeli authorities.
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has strongly condemned the blockade, calling it a violation of international law and warning that it may amount to war crimes.
“As the occupying power, Israel has a legal obligation to ensure the provision of the necessities of life for Palestinians living under its control,” the OHCHR stated. “Any denial of the entry of the necessities of life for civilians may amount to collective punishment. The use of hunger and starvation as a weapon of war is a war crime.”
The blockade, now in its seventh day, has driven prices of basic goods to unprecedented levels and fueled growing anxiety over a return to bombardment and widespread starvation. Health authorities have reported at least eight infant deaths due to freezing conditions, underscoring the urgent need for immediate humanitarian intervention.
