Palestinians brave journey on foot back to Northern Gaza for third day straight

DaysofPal- For the third day in a row, thousands of displaced Palestinians are making their way back to the northern Gaza Strip after passing through the streets of Salah al-Din and Al-Rashid.

Carrying only a few possessions on their difficult 7-kilometer journey to Gaza City, thousands of displaced people began their journey back to their homes in the governorates of Gaza and North Gaza early on Wednesday morning. Some managed to pass through Salah al-Din Street by vehicle after undergoing inspections in line with the agreement between resistance factions and the occupying forces.

The Gaza Municipality has pledged to remove trash and reopen the city’s streets in order to make it easier for locals to move around and for displaced citizens to return.

After 470 days of forced displacement since the start of the ongoing Israeli occupation’s genocidal campaign, more than half a million displaced Palestinians have returned to the Gaza and northern governorates from southern and central Gaza in the last 72 hours, according to the government media office.

The government media office further noted that 80% of the displaced population returned to northern Gaza in just the past two days. While the returnees were warned about remnants left by the occupation army, efforts to provide relief continued.

However, shortages in tent supplies and a delay in aid deliveries due to a reduction in the number of aid trucks entering Gaza remain significant issues. Despite the ceasefire agreement, large quantities of aid remain stuck at Gaza’s borders.

Heavy equipment that would help recover the bodies of those buried beneath the debris has also been prohibited from entering the Strip.

The ceasefire, which started on January 19th, is in its first phase and will last for 42 days. Egypt, Qatar, and the United States mediate negotiations for the next phases.
