DaysofPal- A two-month-old Palestinian infant, Rafah Ali Abu Assi, tragically lost her life in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, on Friday due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbated by the severe cold brought on by the winter storm.
Ashraf al-Qidra, a spokesman for the Gaza Ministry of Health, said the infant’s death was caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which was made worse by the bitterly cold temperatures. The infant was taken to the Gaza European Hospital early on Thursday for treatment but was pronounced dead at noon on Friday. This tragic event underscores the dire living conditions faced by many families in Gaza, particularly those who have been displaced and are living in inadequate shelters.
Rafah’s family had been living in their heavily damaged home east of Khan Younis, which suffered destruction during Israel’s summer offensive on Gaza. Like many of the nearly 110,000 Palestinians left homeless by Israeli bombardments, her family had no choice but to remain in the wreckage of their home due to a lack of alternative shelter. Thousands of displaced families in Gaza are enduring similarly harsh conditions, with many living in makeshift tents made of fabric or nylon that offer little protection against the elements.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, with approximately 2 million of the 2.4 million residents displaced and struggling to survive amid severe shortages of necessities, including food, water, and heating supplies. As winter takes hold, the suffering of these displaced individuals, particularly children, has worsened. Heavy rains have flooded many tents, and the lack of proper heating and shelter has left families unable to keep their children warm.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza has reported a staggering toll since the onset of the Israeli offensive on October 7, 2023. As of the latest reports, 45,206 Palestinians have been killed, and 107,512 have been injured. The ministry also highlighted that there have been several massacres against families, resulting in significant casualties in the last 24 hours alone.
Rescue and civil defense teams face immense challenges in accessing areas affected by the conflict due to the dangerous security situation and deliberate targeting of their operations. This has left many victims trapped under rubble or in the streets, with rescue efforts hindered by the ongoing hostilities.
The displaced people of Gaza have experienced new hardships during the second winter since the start of the Israeli offensive. Families huddled in tattered shelters face relentless rain, strong winds, and freezing temperatures with little to no access to necessities. The grave circumstances highlight how urgently humanitarian assistance and international intervention are needed to relieve the suffering of Gaza’s citizens and give them access to safe housing and essential supplies.
Rafah Ali Abu Assi’s death is a stark reminder of the human toll of the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Her story highlights the urgent need for solutions to address the plight of displaced families, protect civilians, and prevent further loss of innocent lives in the region.
