Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), has called for the urgent provision of vaccines to Gaza.
He said that the region has seen outbreaks of diseases like hepatitis and meningitis amidst the Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza.
Lazzarini reported that UNRWA, with the aid of its partners, has successfully administered vaccines to 80 percent of Gaza’s children since the onset of the war, which has been crucial in mitigating the spread of these illnesses despite the severe humanitarian conditions.
The agency is now planning a vaccination campaign for young children against polio, which has been detected in Gaza’s wastewater, he added.
“The swift and safe delivery of vaccines is key,” said Lazzarini in a post on X. “More importantly, a ceasefire to reach every child with vaccines is urgent.”
