An unidentified Palestinian youth has created a mobile application that permits thousands of Palestinians to replace long hours of waiting at Israeli military checkpoints with just a few seconds of search.
The application allows Palestinians, who have to pass through Israel’s checkpoints, to monitor the traffic situation before enduring long distances, travel obstacles and waiting hours there.
As ‘Israel’ erects hundreds of checkpoints across the occupied West Bank, Palestinians painfully have to pass through them, whether during their movement in the West Bank or when travelling to places of work in 1948-occupied lands.
Based on decisions taken by the Israeli army, in many cases, these checkpoints are being closed or disrupted in the faces of Palestinians waiting there, wasting their time and effort in vain.
Israeli occupation usually attributes the checkpoints’ closure to technical defects in the computers through which it checks citizens’ identities, while in many cases these defects were purposefully and systematically carried out by the Israeli army to aggravate the Palestinian suffering.
Israeli forces deliberately subject passers-by through these checkpoints to humiliating searches. There were many reported cases that were forced to strip naked at these checkpoints under flimsy pretexts.
The app “Azma amazingly put an end to this public crisis in 2016 when it was first published. However, the Israeli occupation had waged a war against it from the outset under the pretext of legal issues raised by the Israeli occupation, which ultimately led to its closure and breaking down.
Since its relaunch this month at the auspices the Burj Al-Luqluq Social Center in occupied Jerusalem, “So far, 30,000 users have downloaded and massively used the app,” said Muntaser Dkaidek, director of the Burj Al-Luqluq Social Center.
The application, which is available on iOS and Android, usually updates from time to time the situation at all West Bank checkpoints.
“Our slogan is that one minute on the app is better than waiting an hour at the checkpoint,” Dkaidek added.
