Guatemala would move its embassy from Tel Avivi to Jerusalem next May, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales declared on Sunday at AIPAC conference held in Washington.
“I would like to thank President Trump for leading the way. His courageous decision has encouraged us to do what is right,” Morales said in his speech before the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee’s Annual Policy Conference (AIPAC).
On the heels of Trump’s Jerusalem announcement, the Guatemalan president announced that his country would take the same decision and move its embassy to the occupied city.
Guatemalan has announced this decision in the past, but it did not take practical measures to implement it after a number of Islamic states had announced they would close their markets ahead of its exports.
It is worth noting that Guatemala was one of the nine states which voted against the UN resolution that condemn Trump’s decisions to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
