First Visual Art Exhibition in Gaza

For the first time, Gazans celebrate on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, the contemporary visual art exhibition “Fenced Off” at Rashad Al-Shawa cultural center in which dozens of Gaza youths attended the event.

The idea came to shed light on the “fenced off” enclave and to display the hardships people have been experiencing in the densely populated enclave as it has been under complete blocked by Israeli Occupation for 15 years.

Several Palestinian local outlets have covered the event along with the Red Cross  where Sculptures, expressing paintings, and movies have been viewed.

The statement “Gaza’s Youth: Suspended lives, Fading opportunities” was widely shown at the front of the exhibition.

“This exhibition reflects the consequences of imposing movement restrictions on an estimated area of 365 km square and over 440,000 young people within. An entire generation has grown up in this space lacking basic elements that others take for granted, such as freedom of movement, opportunities to travel, adequate healthcare, a choice of education and chances to start a business, ” the exhibition directors stated. ” The art displayed in the exhibition is the work of twelve young artists from the Gaza Strip who were defined by the closure of the past 15 years. Inspired by this isolation, the artists were stimulated to creat art using non-traditional means to embody their reality.”

They continued: “Looking at the art on display, we realize through various expressions that there is no place for Utopia here. The artworks appear to be unfamiliar tools for measuring time and space. It is an attempt to answer questions posed by an entire generation longing for freedom, love, dignity, and much more, everyday. This might just be recipe for a better future.”

Israeli Occupation has been imposing a complete blockade, by air, by land, and by sea for 15 years on the Strip which made Gaza the “largest open prison” as the UN stated in its assessment.

consequently, The blockade has devastated Gaza’s economy, caused widespread destruction and left most people largely cut off from the outside world. Today, one million Palestinians in Gaza don’t have enough food to feed their families, despite receiving food assistance or other forms of support.
