Gaza’s health ministry has issued a stark warning about the worsening water crisis in the besieged Palestinian territory, revealing that 90 percent of families are suffering from severe water insecurity, while more than a quarter of tested water samples are contaminated.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the ministry said the widespread contamination is contributing to a surge in waterborne diseases across the population.
The crisis is being exacerbated by the rising summer heat, which has intensified the need for safe drinking water, particularly in overcrowded displacement camps where conditions are described as “catastrophic.”
According to the ministry, the ongoing war and destruction have rendered nearly all key water infrastructure inoperative. Over 90 percent of Gaza’s desalination plants and 80 percent of its wastewater treatment facilities are now completely out of service.
“The health and survival of civilians in Gaza are in extreme jeopardy,” the ministry stated, warning that the breakdown of water systems and sanitation poses an imminent public health disaster if immediate international intervention is not secured.
