DaysofPal- The Palestine Center for Prisoner Studies has issued a stark warning about the alarming rise in deaths of Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli occupation prisons since October 7, 2023.
The center confirmed that at least 61 prisoners, whose identities are known, have been killed under torture or due to deliberate medical neglect—a figure it described as the highest in the history of the Palestinian prisoner movement.
Hundreds more remain unaccounted for, with their fates shrouded in secrecy by Israeli occupation.
A Grim Record of Systematic Crimes
According to the center, these deaths represent only a fraction of the total casualties among detained Palestinians. Field monitoring and testimonies from released prisoners reveal that hundreds of others from Gaza were executed either through direct shooting, torture, starvation, or medical negligence after being arrested during Israel’s genocidal war of extermination on the Strip. Many were killed shortly after arrest, often while bound and completely under control, highlighting what the center describes as “cold-blooded executions.”
Among the latest victims is Khaled Mahmoud Qassem Abdullah, a 40-year-old administrative detainee from Jenin refugee camp who was arrested on November 9, 2023. Held in Megiddo prison, Abdullah’s health deteriorated rapidly due to harsh conditions and deliberate medical neglect. Despite having no prior health issues, he succumbed to his worsening condition last week, joining the ranks of those martyred as a result of systemic abuse within Israeli detention facilities.
Three additional prisoners were killed in just one week alone: Musab Haniyeh, Raafat Abu Fanouneh, and Abdullah himself. Their deaths underscore the escalating brutality faced by detainees, particularly those from Gaza, where over 80% of the identified martyrs originate. Reports indicate that many endured severe torture, including allegations of sexual violence, alongside inhumane living conditions.
Enforced Disappearance and Refusal to Return Bodies
Beyond the documented cases, the center warns of an alarming trend of enforced disappearances. Hundreds of prisoners, primarily from Gaza, remain unaccounted for, with Israeli occupation refusing to disclose their names, locations, or statuses. In some instances, prisoners were reportedly shot immediately after arrest, with their bodies left unrecovered or withheld from families.
Currently, Israeli occupation holds the remains of 70 martyred prisoners, denying their loved ones the dignity of proper burials. This refusal adds to the psychological torment endured by grieving families, who are left without closure or answers regarding the circumstances surrounding their relatives’ deaths.
Political Impunity and Legal Cover for Abuse
The center attributes this surge in fatalities to explicit support from extremist members of the Israeli government, notably Public Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. These officials have allegedly granted Shin Bet interrogators carte blanche to employ prohibited torture methods against detainees, shielding them from accountability even when prisoners die as a result. Such policies reflect a calculated disregard for international law and human rights norms.
Calls for International Action
In light of these revelations, the Palestine Center for Prisoner Studies has urgently appealed to the international community and human rights organizations to intervene. It calls for the formation of independent investigation committees to document crimes committed against Palestinian prisoners, pressuring Israeli occupation to cease its oppressive practices and hold perpetrators accountable.
Furthermore, the center demands that the International Criminal Court (ICC) take immediate action to investigate and prosecute Israeli leaders responsible for war crimes, including the killing and torture of defenseless prisoners. By providing legal immunity to its security forces, Israeli occupation has effectively given the green light for continued atrocities, necessitating robust international condemnation and intervention.
A Cry for Justice
As the death toll among Palestinian prisoners continues to climb, the plight of these individuals—and their families—remains a testament to the urgent need for justice and accountability. The Palestine Center warns that unless decisive measures are taken, the cycle of violence and impunity will persist, perpetuating suffering and undermining prospects for peace in the region.
For now, the voices of the 61 known martyrs echo a call for recognition, remembrance, and redress—a demand echoed by countless others still waiting for answers amid the shadows of silence and denial.
