DayofPal– Israeli occupation siege of northern Gaza has turned it into a “ghost area,” where devastation stretches as far as the eye can see. The Israeli siege and attacks across Gaza enclave have intensified amid renewed ceasefire talks.
Since October 5, 2024, over 5,000 people have been reported killed or missing due to relentless Israeli military operations, with 9,500 more injured in only 100 days, according to medical sources. Amid the rubble, some residents have clung to their homes, defying forced evacuation orders despite the mounting peril.
Described by Gaza’s Government Media Office as “the most horrific form of ethnic cleansing,” the siege has displaced and destroyed the lives of hundreds of thousands. From shelters and schools to hospitals, no place in Gaza has been spared from systematic targeting, Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary reports.
In late December, Kamal Adwan Hospital, a critical lifeline in northern Gaza, was torched and destroyed. The fate of the hospital director, Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, remains unknown after his arrest by Israeli forces.
In the first week of 2025, at least 70 children have been killed across the enclave, according to Gaza’s Civil Defence. UNICEF reports nearly every one of Gaza’s 1.1 million children now requires mental health support, their lives marked by unrelenting violence, displacement, and freezing winter nights in makeshift shelters. Famine-like conditions persist, compounded by an Israeli blockade choking aid and creating unrest among the desperate.
Globally, pressure mounts for a ceasefire. U.S. President Joe Biden has urged an immediate end to hostilities and stressed the importance of humanitarian aid. Negotiations for a deal on captives inch forward, with Israeli leaders will convene a meeting today to discuss inking the deal.
Inside Israel, political tensions simmer. Protests in Tel Aviv over the weekend demanded an end to the war, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces internal challenges to his coalition from far-right ministers resistant to any compromise.
The toll of this ongoing war is staggering: over 46,500 Palestinians killed, 109,660 injured, and nearly 19,000 children orphaned. Journalists, too, have borne the brunt, with 203 killed since the war began 16 months ago.
