DayofPal—Gaza’s Civil Defense has warned that around 30,000 buildings across the Gaza Strip are at risk of collapse, threatening the lives of approximately 150,000 people.
Mohammed Al-Mughayir, director of supplies and equipment at the Civil Defense, urged the people to immediate evacuation, saying on Saturday that the danger extends beyond damaged homes to surrounding streets and nearby buildings due to suspended concrete slabs and unstable structures.
He further explained that intensive bombardment over the past two years has caused deep fractures and perilous changes in the soil, comparable to minor earthquakes.
He added that the explosions from military robots have cracked reinforced concrete, raising the risk of sudden collapses even in buildings that appear habitable.
Al-Mughayir also warned that the Civil Defense is facing severe shortages of fuel and equipment, and that its hydraulic ladder urgently requires maintenance to safely remove hanging debris.
The warning comes as Gaza is hit by its third polar low-pressure system since the start of winter, worsening conditions for hundreds of thousands of displaced people living in worn tents and fragile shelters amid widespread destruction of infrastructure.
According to Civil Defense officials, at least 22 homes partially or completely collapsed during the previous storm on December 10, killing 18 people.
