Since the onset of the ongoing war in Gaza on October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have killed 23 Palestinian prisoners and arrested more than 10,300 people in the West Bank and Jerusalem, according to a statement released by Palestinian prisoners’ organizations.
The statement revealed that 23 prisoners, whose identities have been confirmed and announced, were killed. Additionally, dozens of detainees from Gaza have reportedly died in Israeli prisons and camps, though their identities and the circumstances of their deaths have not been disclosed.
The organizations also reported that the bodies of 21 of the 23 killed prisoners remain in Israeli custody. These are among 32 prisoners whose bodies are still held by Israeli occupation after their identities were made public.
Regarding the arrests, the report noted that approximately 355 women have been detained, including those from the 1948 occupied lands, as well as women from Gaza arrested in the West Bank. This figure does not account for women detained in Gaza, estimated to be in the dozens.
Israeli forces have also detained at least 720 children, and 96 journalists, of whom 50 remain in custody.
Among these, 14 journalists are under administrative detention, and five female journalists are among those identified as detainees from Gaza.
The statement further highlighted that Israeli occupation has issued over 8,322 administrative detention orders, including new and renewed orders, some of which target children and women.
The Palestinian prisoners’ organizations emphasized that daily arrest campaigns are accompanied by escalating crimes and violations, including brutal beatings, threats against detainees and their families, and widespread destruction during home raids.
Vehicles, money, and gold jewelry have been confiscated, and extensive infrastructure damage has been reported, particularly in Tulkarm and Jenin refugee camps.
The statement also indicated that Israeli forces have demolished numerous homes belonging to prisoners’ families and used family members as hostages. Some detainees have been forced to act as human shields.
The arrest campaigns since the beginning of the war have targeted individuals taken from their homes, captured at military checkpoints, forced to surrender under pressure, or held as hostages, the statement added.
The organizations also reported that Israeli forces have carried out field executions, including members of detainees’ families.
It is important to note that these statistics do not include the number of arrests from Gaza. Israeli occupation authorities have admitted to detaining over 4,500 people from Gaza, hundreds of whom have since been released.
Arrests also extended to hundreds of Gaza residents working in the West Bank and those in the West Bank for medical treatment.
As of early August, the total number of prisoners in Israeli jails has reached 9,900, with 3,432 held under administrative detention.
