Ted Chaiban, the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) underscored Thursday the urgent necessity for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
He called for a halt to the unstoppable attacks on the Palestinian children in particular, pressing on the necessity for facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid into the war-ravaged enclave.
In a press statement issued on Thursday evening, the UN official advocated for the imperative protection of children and the enhancement of security protocols and operational procedures for humanitarian workers.
He also emphasized the necessity of facilitating the movement of children who are separated from their families due to the ongoing attacks and separation barriers.
Chaiban highlighted the alarming deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, reporting a surge in displacement from 1.7 to 1.9 million.
“The areas once deemed safe have now been subjected to Israeli bombardment, leaving no refuge for those seeking shelter,” he added.
The accumulation of untreated waste and deteriorating sanitary conditions, he argued, have escalated the risk of disease, particularly as families are compelled to scavenge through refuse in search of cooking materials.
The UN official reported a significant decline in the flow of humanitarian aid, with the daily influx of aid trucks dropping from 100 in August to a mere 15 in September. This reduction, attributed to security concerns, has further exacerbated the suffering of the civilian population.
Chaiban sounded the alarm about the dire situation faced by students in the Gaza Strip due to the destruction of schools and universities, saying there is a potential loss of an entire generation in Gaza as children have now missed nearly an entire academic year.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, over 14,000 children have been killed since the onset of the ongoing Israeli genocide in the Strip.
