DaysofPal- The United Nations has called on the Israeli occupation to respect international law following its assault on the “Sumud Flotilla”, a convoy of ships attempting to break the blockade of Gaza.

Speaking at the UN’s daily press briefing on Thursday, Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, expressed hope that the activists on board would not be harmed.

“We believe, of course, in the need to respect the applicable laws in international waters. That is all I can say on this matter,” Haq told reporters.

He emphasized that the UN’s priority was to ensure that those on the ships “are not harmed and are treated with full respect for their rights and dignity.”

The comments came after Israeli naval forces attacked the flotilla late Wednesday with around ten warships, seizing several vessels and detaining hundreds of international activists on board.

The flotilla’s organizers said they were intercepted in international waters and issued a distress call, describing the incident as a war crime.

International rights groups, including Amnesty International, condemned the Israeli assault and demanded protection for the flotilla, while the UN reiterated that any attack against the humanitarian mission was “unacceptable.”

The “Sumud Flotilla” is the latest international campaign by pro-Palestinian activists to deliver aid to Gaza and challenge the Israeli suffocating blockade, which has been in place for more than 18 years.
