DayofPal– The United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) has sounded a stark alarm over Israel’s ongoing military atrocities in Gaza, warning that what are being labeled as “evacuation orders” is in fact be unlawful forced displacements, a potential violation of international law.
Since March 18, Israeli forces have issued 21 evacuation directives, including a sweeping March 31 order affecting nearly all of Rafah.
The order was quickly followed by a large-scale ground assault, leaving tens of thousands of civilians, already displaced and sheltering in areas like Tal Al-Sultan, trapped with no safe passage and no humanitarian relief.
“These orders appear designed not to protect civilians, but to remove them,” OHCHR stated, raising fears that Israel may be attempting to establish a “buffer zone” by permanently displacing Palestinians.
Such a move, if proven, would breach the Fourth Geneva Convention and could amount to a crime against humanity under the Rome Statute.
The situation on the ground has grown even more dire. Between March 18 and April 9, Israeli strikes hit 224 residential locations, including makeshift tent shelters.
In 36 verified incidents, the victims were exclusively women and children. One April 6 airstrike in Deir Al-Balah claimed the lives of a young girl, four women, and a four-year-old boy while evacuating.
Even designated “safe zones” have been not safe. In Al-Mawasi, a coastal strip in Khan Younis, OHCHR documented at least 23 attacks on tents housing displaced families. Israeli officials continue to promote these zones as secure, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
Journalists, too, are under threat. On April 6 and 7, an Israeli airstrike hit a tent near Khan Younis’ Nasser Medical Complex, where members of the press were sheltering. The attack killed one journalist and a media assistant, and injured nine others.
Since the war escalated in October 2023, over 209 journalists have been killed in Gaza, with Israel continuing to block international media access, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from human rights observers.
The humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly. Gaza has now endured six weeks under a near-total blockade. No food, no medicine, and no clean water are entering.
Reports have emerged that Israeli officials are tying humanitarian aid to the release of Israeli captives, a condition the UN warns may constitute collective punishment and the use of starvation as a weapon of war.
“These actions threaten the very survival of Palestinians in Gaza,” OHCHR stated. “Targeting civilians, journalists, and critical infrastructure not only violates international humanitarian law, it also risks plunging the region further into an irreversible catastrophe.”
As global pressure mounts, the UN is calling for immediate international intervention and accountability before it’s too late.
