DaysofPal – Hamas on Wednesday warned of a potential escalation at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied Jerusalem amid calls by Israeli settler groups for mass incursions into the site.
In a statement, the Movement said appeals by Jewish groups to increase visits to the compound during what they mark as the anniversary of the destruction of the ancient Temple could heighten tensions and threaten the historical and legal status quo at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Hamas described the planned incursions as a provocation, accusing Israeli occupation authorities and settler groups of attempting to alter the religious and historical identity of Jerusalem.
It said such efforts would fail to change the identity of the city or its Islamic holy sites.
The Movement also condemned what it described as Israeli vandalism inside the mosque compound, including the drawing of religious symbols in the eastern courtyard, calling the incidents part of broader efforts to undermine Al-Aqsa’s Islamic heritage.
Hamas warned that any harm to the mosque would constitute a “red line” and could trigger further escalation, reiterating that the site’s historical and legal status must remain unchanged.
The Movement called on Palestinians, particularly residents of Jerusalem and Palestinians living in the territories occupied in 1948, to increase their presence at Al-Aqsa Mosque and remain in its courtyards in response to what it described as ongoing Israeli threats.
It also urged Arab and Muslim countries, as well as religious institutions, human rights organizations, and media outlets, to take action and support efforts to protect Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam.
