DaysofPal- The United Nations has strongly condemned the Israeli move to cut electricity and water supplies to UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) facilities in Jerusalem, warning that the action undermines the agency’s ability to deliver essential services to Palestinian refugees.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Thursday that Secretary-General António Guterres denounced the measure, stressing that it would further obstruct UNRWA’s capacity to operate effectively.
He emphasized that the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations fully applies to UNRWA, its properties, assets, and staff, noting that its facilities are protected under international law.
Separately, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini condemned the decision, describing it as part of a systematic campaign to discredit the agency and hinder its humanitarian role.
The condemnation follows a vote by the Israeli Knesset on Tuesday approving legislation to cut electricity and water to UNRWA offices in occupied East Jerusalem.
The Israeli law passed its second and third readings with 59 lawmakers in favor and seven opposed out of 120, where it took immediate effect.
UN officials warned that the measure could have severe humanitarian consequences, further disrupting UNRWA operations at a time when Palestinian refugees face escalating needs amid ongoing political and humanitarian crises.
