Two Palestinian Siblings in Israeli jails Suspend their Hunger Strike

Two Palestinian brother detainees suspended their hunger strike on Monday, 28 August 2023 after Israeli promises to transfer the brothers to the same Israeli jail.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club said that the two brothers detainees Hatem and Hazem Al-Qawasmeh suspended their hunger strike after Israeli promises to transfer the brothers to the same Israeli jail.

The Prisoner’s Club stated that the 42-year-old Palestinian detainee Hatem started his hunger strike 16 days ago, calling on the Israeli Prison Service to transfer him next to his 44-year-old brother Hazem in the Israeli jail of Raymond.

Hazem started his hunger strike two days ago in order to put more pressure on the Israeli Prison Service to achieve their demand.

It is noteworthy that Hatem al-Qawasmeh has been sentenced to life imprisonment and has been detained since 2003 and Hazem has been sentenced to 25 years in prison and has been detained since 2002.

Palestinian detainees have constantly resorted to hunger strikes as a method to oppose the Israeli violations against them, demanding an end to these illegal policies that violate international law and Human rights accords.

Nine Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails have been on open-ended hunger strikes identified as Kayed Fasfous, Sultan Khalouf, Osama Daqrouq, Hadi Nazzal, Mohammad Zakarneh, Anas Kmail, Abdelrahman Baraka, Mohammad Ikhmis, and Zuhdi Abdo in protest of their administrative detention without a charge or trial.

The Israeli occupation has escalated its administrative detention policy against Palestinians as the number of administrative detainees currently exceeds 760, including minors, women, and the elderly, according to the Palestinian Prisoners Society.

The Society added that 80 percent of the administrative detainees are former prisoners who spent years in the prisons most were administrative detentions.

Since 2023, the Israeli occupation has issued about 1978 administrative detention warrants until the end of last July, according to the data of the Prisoners’ Club.

Israel’s illegal policy of administrative detention is a pre-emptive measure that allows the detention of Palestinians without charge or trial for lengthy periods of time based on disclosed allegations that even a detainee’s lawyer is barred from viewing.
