Tragic Story of Gazan Child killed in Israeli Attack

DaysofPal- A three-year-old Palestinian boy was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on Wednesday as he returned home from a relative’s wedding, turning a family celebration into a funeral within seconds.

The child, identified as Yahya al-Mallahi, was riding on his father’s shoulders when an Israeli aircraft targeted a passing vehicle near them in the al-Daraj neighborhood, according to testimony given by his father to local outlet Palestine Online.

”The strike killed Yahya instantly and left his father and three uncles wounded. One of the uncles is reported to be in critical condition.

Three people inside the targeted vehicle were also killed.

The incident occurred on April 16, 2026, at around 9:15 a.m. Jerusalem time, as the family was returning on foot from a wedding hall near the al-Ghafri junction to their home in the al-Sidra area of Gaza City.

Due to the lack of transportation, Yahya’s father, 33-year-old Mukhlis al Mallahi, said he and his relatives decided to walk.

“A police vehicle passed right next to us,” Mukhlis recounted. Moments later, an explosion tore through the street.

“My brother said to me, ‘Let me carry Yahya for you.’ As soon as he lifted him down from my shoulders, the explosion happened.” He added.

Shrapnel struck Mukhlis in the head, back, and hand. When he realized what had happened, he turned to search for his son.

“I looked at him and found him martyred. The injury to his head was fatal,” he said.

Despite his own injuries, Mukhlis refused to leave for medical treatment until he had buried his only son.

“They asked me to go for treatment before the burial, but I refused. I buried him with my own hands, then went [to the hospital] when I could barely stand from the pain,” he said.

Yahya’s small body was laid out on a morgue bed, stained with blood, his clothing still bearing traces of the wedding celebration that had preceded his death. He was later buried in the grave of his uncle, who had been killed earlier, according to the family.

The death shattered what had begun as a rare moment of joy for the family amid the ongoing war in Gaza.

Mukhlis said he had attended his cousin’s wedding luncheon and initially planned for Yahya’s mother to bring the boy to the evening celebration.

“Before I left, he insisted on coming with me,” the father recalled.

“He clung to me and put on his clothes, especially after he had cried a lot the previous night because he couldn’t go with me.” He said.

Yahya was the only boy in the family, born after three sisters: Lara, 10, Lin, 8, and Samia, 5. His parents had waited a decade for a son.

“I named him after the Prophet Zakariya’s son, whom God granted to him at an advanced age. He was our great joy,” Mukhlis said.

The family had already been touched by the violence before Wednesday’s strike. Yahya’s sister Lin was wounded during displacement in Nuseirat camp and still suffers from her injuries.

Mukhlis believes the strike that killed his son was deliberate. He says the police vehicle that was hit appeared to have been under surveillance.

“The vehicle was being monitored, and the occupation waited until it reached the place where we were gathered to cause the largest number of martyrs,” he said.

His voice breaking, the father described the future he had imagined for his son: “I dreamed of seeing him grow up, study, and celebrate him as a groom… but he left. I buried him beside his uncle.”

“He cried so much that he couldn’t come with me. We went to a wedding, and we came back to a funeral.” Mukhlis added.

Local reporters say Yahya’s story is one among countless similar tragedies in Gaza, where months of conflict have made sudden death a daily reality and turned even moments of joy into potential scenes of loss.
