DaysofPal: As the Israeli siege of northern Gaza enters its 12th day, the situation in northern Gaza’s hospitals has become unimaginable, putting the healthcare system on the verge of collapse.
Three hospitals have received orders to evacuate under direct threat from the Israeli military, leaving hundreds of patients, including children in intensive care, and 220 healthcare workers in limbo.
Describing the dire situation of the health facilities in the north, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, said the situation for hospitals in the besieged area was catastrophic, and called for opening safe corridors to save patients in the area.
“For the past three days, the Israeli army has been sending messages demanding the evacuation of the hospital and the children. I was officially informed by the army threateningly that the health system would be shut down and that patients and hospital staff must evacuate, leaving the hospital empty without providing any services”, Abu Safiya said in a statement.
The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry (CoI) on Thursday released a report in which it found Israel “perpetrated a concerted policy to destroy Gaza’s healthcare system”.
As a result of the ongoing Israeli siege, approximately 200,000 Palestinians in northern Gaza have been without food or drinking water for 10 consecutive days. Meanwhile, the Israeli army’s invasion of the area has resulted in the deaths of over 350 Palestinians, hundreds of injuries, and the destruction of many homes and residential buildings.
