Thousands of Israelis demonstrated Thursday evening, July 20, 2023, in several areas against the Israeli government’s plan to weaken the judiciary, coinciding with a press conference held by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which he defended the plan and launched an attack on the opposition and demonstrators.
The demonstrators closed several central streets in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Ra’anana, expressing their refusal of the unending legislative amendment aimed at abolishing the pretext of unreasonableness that allows the Supreme Court to annul government decisions.
Netanyahu also accused the leaders of these demonstrations, the parties behind them, and the opposition leaders, of trying to “intimidate and terrorize” Israeli citizens, claiming that the legislation on the pretext of unreasonableness “will only serve to strengthen democracy in Israel.
For months, tens of thousands of Israeli settlers have regularly taken to the streets to protest against the reform.
