DaysofPal- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Tuesday underscored that sovereignty and territorial integrity are inviolable principles, stressing that they apply equally to Ukraine, the Gaza Strip, and Venezuela.
Writing on the social media platform X, Sanchez said that “respect for the sovereignty of all states and their territorial integrity is a principle that cannot be compromised, from Ukraine to Gaza, including Venezuela.”
His comments came amid renewed international discussion sparked by remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, who highlighted Greenland’s strategic importance and suggested it was necessary for U.S. national security.
Sanchez dismissed such claims, reiterating Spain’s support for Denmark and the people of Greenland.
“Spain will always remain firmly committed to the United Nations,” Sanchez said, adding that Madrid stands in full solidarity with Denmark and Greenland.
In a related development, Spain joined Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and Chile in a joint statement issued on Sunday rejecting the unilateral U.S. military actions on Venezuelan territory.
The statement, released by Spanish authorities, expressed deep concern over the situation in Venezuela and denounced actions it said violate fundamental rules of international law.
“These actions run counter to the core principles of international law, particularly the prohibition of the use or threat of force and the respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, as set out in the United Nations Charter,” the statement said.
The six countries warned that such measures create a highly dangerous precedent for regional peace and security and endanger civilian populations.
They emphasized that Venezuela’s crisis must be resolved solely through peaceful means, including dialogue and negotiations, in line with the will of the Venezuelan people and free from external interference.
Spain hosts one of the largest Venezuelan diasporas in the world, including high-profile opponents of President Nicolás Maduro such as Edmundo González and Leopoldo López.
On Monday, about 1,000 protesters rallied outside the U.S. Embassy in Madrid to denounce as “imperialist aggression” against Venezuela.
Demonstrators waved Venezuelan flags alongside banners and flags of Spain’s Podemos party and the Spanish Communist Party.
