DayofPal- Al Jazeera cameraman Fadi al-Wahidi has fallen into a coma after his condition worsened following a gunshot wound inflicted by Israeli forces in the Jabalia refugee camp on October 9.
Israeli authorities have denied permission for al-Wahidi and fellow Al Jazeera photographer Ali latter to leave Gaza for medical treatment, despite calls from three media freedom organizations.
The Committee to Protect Journalists stated that they have not received a response from Israeli officials regarding the request for their medical evacuation.
The doctor treating al-Wahidi confirmed that he had multiple surgeries, but medical staff were unable to prevent his paralysis.
In a statement, Al Jazeera condemned the targeting of its journalists and called on the international community to “take immediate action” to protect media workers and civilians in the Gaza Strip. They also urged holding the Israeli army accountable for its “repeated crimes against journalists.”
Photojournalist Fadi Alwahidi, aged 24, was hit in the neck, on 9 October, by an Israeli sniper while filming the siege of the Jabalia camp, located in the north of the Palestinian enclave, for Al-Jazeera.
Two days before, on 7 October, Ali Attar, aged 27 and also a cameraman for the Qatari news channel, was hit by an Israeli strike while covering the displacement of locals fleeing the siege towards Deir al Balah.
