DaysofPal- Seasonal influenza has turned into a growing public health crisis in the Gaza Strip, driven by a severely weakened healthcare system and an acute shortage of medicines. The illness is leaving thousands suffering from extreme exhaustion, persistent pain, and respiratory problems unfamiliar to many families in the past.
Years of Israeli war conditions have left Gaza’s population suffering from widespread malnutrition and deprived of even the most basic heating supplies. As a result, what might normally be a mild cough or fever has become a serious risk, often leading to dangerous complications.
Over recent days, residents have taken to social media to voice growing alarm over the spread of what they describe as a severe mutated influenza virus. The illness affects both children and adults, causing high temperatures and prolonged fever, and adding to the daily suffering of people battling disease in an environment that actively enables its spread.
Firsthand Accounts From the Infected
One patient described his experience with the virus, saying, “The virus that infected me, and most people in Gaza, is extremely exhausting. The pain, fatigue, and breathing difficulties are unlike anything I’ve experienced before, especially among children and families living in tents.”
He added, “It feels as if this virus was made for Gaza. Or perhaps it’s a normal virus, but people’s immunity has dropped to zero because of food shortages, harsh living conditions, and constant psychological pressure.”
Another patient stressed that recovery requires patience and endurance.
“After five days of infection with the virus currently spreading in Gaza, I experienced severe fatigue and symptoms similar to those reported by most patients, all while medicines are scarce and the healthcare system is overwhelmed.”
Many others commented that this illness is among the hardest they have ever faced, with symptoms far more intense than ordinary influenza. Severe exhaustion, continuous pain, and difficulty breathing were repeatedly mentioned.
Residents and observers believe Gaza is witnessing an early and dangerous peak of the influenza season, driven by a sharp decline in general immunity after a year marked by malnutrition and hunger.
“A Deadly Flu”
Some bloggers said the symptoms were so intense that they felt they were confronting a “deadly flu,” more severe than any previous wave of illness they had experienced. Extreme fatigue, persistent pain, and breathing difficulties topped the list of complaints, alongside growing fear of serious complications.
Activists summed up the situation starkly: “In Gaza, everything turns into a killer, cold, hunger, viruses… everything.”
An Environment That Fuels Infection
Social media users warned that the illness has become far more likely to develop into severe complications, particularly with the onset of winter. In Gaza, influenza has shifted from a controllable seasonal disease into a direct threat to life—not solely because of the virus itself, but due to the collapse of the healthcare system and restrictions on medical supplies.
They pointed to living conditions that accelerate transmission, including overcrowded tents, mud, rain, and extreme cold, alongside a critical lack of medicines. Some compared the illness’s severity to, or worse than, previous global outbreaks, noting its prolonged impact on the body.
Bloggers concluded that Israeli control over the entry of medicines into Gaza—particularly antivirals and influenza treatments—has severely limited access to essential care. This, they said, has turned the fight against the virus into a compounded challenge for both civilians and exhausted medical staff, deepening an already catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
