DaysofPal – Israeli occupation authorities released six Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip on Sunday evening, transferring them immediately upon arrival to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza for medical examinations and assessment of their health conditions.
Local sources said the released detainees are Ibrahim Yousef Ibrahim Marouf, 52, and Ahmed Saadi Saeed Nasr, 30, from the town of Jabalia in northern Gaza; Nour al-Din Nasser Idris Abu Ziyada, 34, and Mohammed Osama Abdel-Najjar, 28, from Khan Younis; Atef Mahmoud Yassin Al-Sheikh, 50, from Rafah; and Ihab Mohammed Abdel-Karim Abu Hajras, 31, from the town of Bani Suheila, east of Khan Younis.
The detainees are undergoing a series of medical tests at the hospital, as they suffer from varying health conditions resulting from the harsh treatment they endured during their detention in Israeli prisons.
According to human rights organizations, the men were arrested during Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip through ground incursions, military checkpoints, and raids in which civilians were detained from their homes and displacement shelters without clear legal procedures.
Their release comes as part of intermittent Israeli operations involving detainees from Gaza who were held for months in prisons lacking minimum humanitarian standards. Documented testimonies indicate that detainees were subjected to torture and severe mistreatment during their incarceration.
Former prisoners have reported that many of those released suffer from malnutrition and injuries caused by intense physical abuse inside Israeli detention facilities.
For its part, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it “facilitated the transfer of six released detainees from the Kerem Shalom crossing to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital,” adding that its teams also helped restore contact and reunite the detainees with their families.
However, the ICRC stated that it has not been able to access Palestinian detainees held in Israeli detention centers since October 2023.
The organization stressed the need to be informed of the fate and whereabouts of all detainees and to be granted access to them, emphasizing that under international humanitarian law, detainees must be treated humanely, held under acceptable conditions, and allowed to communicate with their families.
The ICRC added that many Palestinian families are anxiously awaiting any news about their detained relatives, deeply concerned about their health and safety. It said the organization continues its dialogue with Israeli authorities to resume visits to all Palestinian detainees.
In mid-October last year, Israeli authorities released approximately 1,700 detainees from Gaza as part of a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel. The agreement came into effect on October 10, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, under a multi-stage plan announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Most of those released at the time arrived in severely deteriorated health conditions, with several recounting experiences of torture, starvation, and humiliation inside Israeli prisons.
More than 10,000 Palestinians, including women and children, are still being held in Israeli prisons, according to Israeli and Palestinian human rights organizations. Many are subjected to torture, starvation, and medical neglect, practices that have led to the deaths of numerous detainees.
