PLO Official Rejects Labeling Hamas as Terrorist, Signals Dialogue on Inclusion
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

DayofPal—A senior Palestinian official has stated that Hamas should not be classified as a terrorist organization and dismissed calls for its disarmament.

He also revealed plans for potential dialogue over the movement inclusion in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Azzam Al-Ahmad, Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, made the remarks in an interview with Egypt’s Al-Shorouk newspaper, addressing key political challenges facing the Palestinian leadership.

Al-Ahmad said discussions would soon begin regarding Hamas’s possible integration into the PLO framework, describing such talks as part of broader efforts to reorganize and unify Palestinian political institutions.

He firmly rejected demands for Hamas to disarm, amid ongoing international pressure tied to ceasefire arrangements and future governance of Gaza.

The official also criticized proposals he attributed to the United States aimed at reforming the Palestinian Authority, calling them “impossible” and harmful to Palestinian national identity.

According to Al-Ahmad, some of the suggested reforms included changes to school curricula, such as removing references to Palestinian national symbols, including the map and flag, conditions he said were unacceptable.

The senior official was elected to his PLO post last May, following the appointment of Hussein Al-Sheikh as Vice President of the Palestinian Authority.

He also expressed disappointment with the broader Arab response to the war in Gaza, saying that, aside from Egypt and Jordan, most Arab states had not taken effective steps to prevent the displacement of Palestinians.

The remarks come amid continuing debate over Gaza’s post-war governance, reconciliation between Palestinian factions, and international efforts to shape future political arrangements in the territory.
