Kayed Al-Fasfos, a 34-year-old Palestinian resident of the town of Dura, located to the south of Hebron, finds himself teetering on the brink of a life-threatening health crisis as he enters the 59th day of his hunger strike in Israeli jails. This protest, which has drawn international attention, serves as a defiant stand against his administrative detention by the Israeli occupation. The situation has been exacerbated by what many view as the Israeli government’s stubborn unwillingness to engage with Al-Fasfos’s demands.

The Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) issued a strongly-worded statement, expressing grave concern over Al-Fasfos’s rapidly deteriorating health while leveling scathing criticism at the Israeli occupation prison service (IPS) for its handling of the case. On Thursday, in response to Al-Fasfos’s worsening condition, the IPS transferred him from Ashkelon prison to the medical facility at Ramle prison. This move was met with skepticism and raised eyebrows as it fell short of transferring him to a civilian hospital, a decision seen by many as indicative of Israeli punitive stance against him.

Kayed Al-Fasfos’s journey through this ordeal began on May 2, 2023, when the Israeli occupation re-arrested him after having spent nearly seven years within the confines of Israeli jails. His hunger strike, which commenced at the end of May, has now stretched into its 59th day, serving as a formidable testament to his resolve and resistance against his administrative detention. Notably, this is not Al-Fasfos’s first hunger strike; in 2021, he embarked on a similar protest lasting an astonishing 131 days, aimed at challenging the very foundations of administrative detention.

Administrative detention, a practice frequently employed by the Israeli occupation, enables the detention of Palestinians without formal charges or trial, often shrouded in secrecy due to undisclosed or even unavailable evidence.

The international community has not been idle spectators to Al-Fasfos’s plight. Human rights organizations, activists, and advocates have rallied behind his cause, demanding his immediate release and an end to administrative detention practices.

As Kayed Al-Fasfos’s health continues to deteriorate, the urgency surrounding his case has intensified, prompting renewed calls for international intervention. The focus is not only on preserving his life but also on addressing the larger implications and human rights concerns stemming from the Israeli use of administrative detention. His hunger strike is a stark reminder of the enduring tensions and human rights challenges in the region, underscoring the critical need for a peaceful resolution and the unwavering respect for fundamental rights and freedoms.
