Unsettling Scene Unfolds in Jerusalem on Yom Kippur
Jerusalem witnessed an unsettling scene on Saturday morning, September 30, 2023, as extremist settlers performed Talmudic rituals and provocative dances near the revered Al-Aqsa Mosque and in the Old City. This event took place on the first day of the Jewish holiday known as “Yom Kippur.”
Eyewitnesses reported that dozens of settlers stormed the Qatanin Market, leading to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, where they conducted Talmudic rituals under strict protection from Israeli occupation forces.
Witnesses further explained that the settlers engaged in provocative rituals, dances, and singing in the Old City, particularly in front of the Asbat Gate, one of the entrances to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, as part of their “Yom Kippur” celebrations.

These provocative acts come after Israeli authorities compelled local shop owners in the Qatanin Market to keep their shops closed before 10 AM, citing the need to provide space for Jewish extremists to perform their Talmudic rituals in the area.
The “Qatanin Market” has faced an unprecedented onslaught from Israeli forces and settlers, with tensions escalating during Jewish holidays, particularly “Yom Kippur.”
These events have transformed the market into a site for Jewish religious practices, dances, and chants, often meant to taunt and provoke Palestinians.
Last year, Israeli forces forced Jerusalemite shopkeepers to close their stores for seven consecutive days to secure the prayers of settlers, in a dangerous attempt to convert the area into a Jewish synagogue.
Israeli authorities and extremist groups routinely exploit holidays as opportunities to carry out their Torah-based rituals in the Old City and Al-Aqsa Mosque, provoking Palestinians and increasing pressure on them.
“Yom Kippur” marks the third stage of the Jewish holiday season, during which supposed Temple Mount groups have called on settlers to carry out unprecedented incursions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Calls for Jerusalem residents to assemble and confront the extremist settlers, particularly at the Qatanin Gate, have persisted. It is seen as crucial to oppose the incursions and defend Islamic sanctities in the face of these provocations.
