Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails decided on Sunday, 3 September 2023 to start a massive hunger strike in protest of continuous Israeli violations.
Palestinian prisoners movement stated that Some 1,000 Palestinian detainees decided to begin a mass hunger strike, following the decision of far-right Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir to reduce visits to prisoners’ families to once every two months instead of once a month.
Many are being held under administrative detention – without charge or trial.
Earlier today, Itamar Ben-Gvir directed the Israeli Prison Service to reduce family visitation for Palestinian detainees imprisoned in Israeli jails from once a month to once every two months.
“The Prison Service must strictly adhere to the legal requirement of family visits for security prisoners every two months. As soon as I became aware of this situation, I immediately instructed compliance with the law.”, stated Ben-Gvir on Friday.
Ben-Gvir has taken measures against Palestinians since he assumed the position of minister of national security in Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government by the end of 2022 through various punitive measures, including preventing the early release of administrative prisoners, closing the bakery in the Israeli jails, reducing the use of bathrooms and water to a minimum, and canceling dental treatments.
On January 30, Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announced plans to introduce legislation allowing the death penalty against Palestinians.
In November, Ben-Gvir made the introduction of capital punishment against Palestinians found guilty of killing Israelis a condition for his faction to join Netanyahu’s coalition government.
Palestinian detainees have constantly resorted to hunger strikes as a method to oppose their administrative detention, demanding an end to this illegal policy that violates international law and Human rights accords.
