Palestinian detainees Kayed Al-Fassfous and Sultan Khalouf are now on their 46th consecutive day of an ongoing hunger strike to protest their administrative detention, and their health is steadily deteriorating.
The Hanthala Center for Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners issued a statement today, indicating that Al-Fassfous is grappling with severe fatigue and exhaustion. His mobility has been drastically limited, rendering him unable to walk or stand, and he experiences pains throughout his body.
Al-Fassfous, aged 34 from Hebron, was re-arrested on May 2, 2023, and placed under administrative detention. He is a former detainee with approximately seven years of imprisonment under his belt, and he has been subjected to recurrent arrests since 2007.
Moreover, Al-Fassfous previously initiated a hunger strike in late May and early June of last year, which lasted for 9 days. In 2021, he embarked on a 131-day hunger strike to protest his administrative detention.
Concurrently, Sultan Khalouf, aged 42 from Jenin, is detained by Israeli occupation forces at the Ramle Prison clinic, and his health is progressively deteriorating.
Israeli occupation authorities re-arrested him on August 3, 2023, initially issuing a four-month administrative detention order that was later extended. The Israeli court has postponed its ruling on Khalouf’s recent appeal contesting his administrative detention.
Khalouf, a former detainee who has spent four and a half years in Israeli prisons, previously undertook a 67-day hunger strike in 2019 to protest his administrative detention.
This year has seen a surge in individual hunger strikes, particularly as a response to the policy of administrative detention, which has been widely applied to various segments of the Palestinian community.
The total number of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons stands at 5,200, including 1,264 held under administrative detention, among them 20 children and four women, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club.
