The Israeli military court at the Ofer prison has handed down a cruel and unjust verdict against Palestinian detainee Kayed Al-Fasfous. Al-Fasfous, who has been on a hunger strike for a staggering 64 days, is protesting his detention without charges or trial by the Israeli occupation.
The Israeli court’s decision to reject an appeal for early release, filed on behalf of the deteriorating health of Al-Fasfous, has sparked international outrage. It has come as a deafening blow to those who hoped for justice and compassion in this long-standing issue.
Kayed Al-Fasfous, a 34-year-old resident of Dura in the Hebron province of the occupied West Bank, was re-arrested by Israeli occupation forces on May 2 under administrative detention. He has been held without formal charges or trial, a practice that has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations worldwide.
Al-Fasfous’ ordeal began over a year ago when he was initially detained, prompting concerns over the arbitrary policy of administrative detention employed by the Israeli occupation. Administrative detention allows the Israeli occupation to imprison Palestinians for up to six months without trial or charges. Shockingly, these detention orders can be renewed indefinitely at the discretion of the Israeli military commander.
The case of Al-Fasfous is not an isolated incident. According to the Palestinian Prisoner Society, there are approximately 520 Palestinians currently languishing in Israeli jails under administrative detention, out of a total of around 4,500 Palestinian prisoners. This practice has been consistently decried as a grave violation of human rights.
The Palestinian Authority’s Committee for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs has unequivocally condemned the Israeli court’s decision, labeling it a de facto death sentence for Al-Fasfous. The committee highlights the protracted duration of his hunger strike and the imminent risks to his life as reasons for their grave concern.
The committee has placed the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Israeli occupation, holding them responsible for Al-Fasfous’ life. They have issued a fervent call for immediate intervention to save his life and to put an end to the profound injustice inherent in his continued, unfair detention.
The case of Kayed Al-Fasfous is a stark reminder of the systematic violation of human rights and dignity faced by the Palestinian people living under the harsh yoke of the Israeli occupation rule for more than 75 years. It underscores the urgent need for international attention and action to address these ongoing injustices.
As the world watches, the fate of Kayed Al-Fasfous hangs in the balance, and the international community is left wondering if justice and humanity will prevail in the face of such a grave injustice.
