The Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs reported on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, that a group of Palestinian prisoners in Ashkelon prison underwent a harsh and brutal crackdown while being transferred to Nafha prison in a recent campaign organized by the Israeli occupation prisons administration.
Youssef Matia, a lawyer for the authority, quoted the prisoner Mohammad Abu Hameed as saying, “The occupation stormed Ashkelon prison accompanied by suppression units in a brutal and provocative manner. They shackled us and transferred us using a ‘buseta’ to Nafha prison.”
Abu Hameed, as reported by lawyer Matia, added that the occupation authorities did not allow them to take any of their basic belongings, leaving them without blankets or clothes.
Upon some prisoners’ return to Ashkelon after a week of transfer to retrieve their belongings, they were shocked to find everything vandalized and destroyed in a savage manner.
As a result, the prisoners initiated protest steps and demanded compensation for the damage caused by the prison administration, according to a statement from the Prisoners’ Commission.
Ashkelon prison currently holds 36 Palestinian prisoners, all of whom are suffering from various illnesses including cancer, heart diseases, and herniated discs.
Israeli occupation authorities hold approximately 5,000 Palestinian prisoners across 23 prisons, detention centers, and interrogation facilities.
Among them are 1,200 administrative detainees, held without formal charges or trials, 32 female prisoners, 180 minors, and 700 sick prisoners.
