Israel suppresses protest in Sheikh Jarrah, rejecting siege and displacement

Days of Palestine – Jerusalem

On Saturday evening, the Israeli occupation forces attacked a solidarity stand at the entrance to the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied Jerusalem, in which dozens participated in rejection of its two-month siege and the occupation policy aimed at displacing the residents of the neighborhood.

Israeli occupation forces fired tear gas and sound bombs at the participants in the protest and beat a number of young men with sticks.

Local sources said that Aref Hammad, one of those threatened with eviction in Sheikh Jarrah, was hit by a stun grenade in his back, fired by the Israeli occupation soldiers.

During the protest, the citizens chanted slogans demanding an end to the siege imposed on the neighborhood two months ago, and another condemning the displacement practices of the occupation against the people of Sheikh Jarrah.

The participants raised banners expressing their solidarity with the people of Silwan and Al-Aqsa Mosque and calling for unity in the face of the occupation.

Among the chants that were raised in the event: “Stability, steadfastness, until the evacuations are removed”, “From Sheikh Jarrah, a salutation… to the honorable Silwan.”

Israeli occupation forces deployed heavily at the entrance to Sheikh Jarrah to prevent the protest, at a time when they allowed settlers to enter Othman bin Affan Street, whose residents suffer from siege and restrictions.

Israeli occupation continues to close the entrances to the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and prevents citizens from outside the neighborhood and solidarity activists from reaching it and meeting its residents.

Twenty-eight Palestinian families have been at risk of eviction from the homes they have resided in since 1956. Settler groups claim that the homes were built on land that was owned by Jews before 1948, which the residents deny, as well as documents in their possession.
