Days of Palestine – Jerusalem

A researcher in Jerusalem affairs and a member of the Silwan Land Defense Committee, Fakhri Abu Diab, warned that 17 homes will be demolished in the Al-Bustan neighborhood of Silwan, south of occupied Jerusalem, until the end of next July.

Abu Diab said that 98 homes are notified of demolition, of which 17 are notified of immediate demolition; According to the Israeli “Kaminitz” law, which prevents the possibility of appealing it in the courts or freezing it, during different dates until the end of next month.

Abu Diab indicated that the targeted homes are for the families of Abu Diab, Hamdan, Jalajel, Rajabi, Qwaider, Badran, Odeh, Shafi’, Rajab, Abd al-Rahman, and Bashir.

He added, “The occupation police and municipality teams distributed summonses to homeowners in Al-Bustan, today, Monday, to review the municipality and appear before its inspector, claiming that the homeowners did not implement orders to self-demolish their homes after notifying them during the year 2018.”

He explained that, during the previous periods, the Israeli occupation authorities had also notified the demolition of a number of Jerusalemite houses in the Al-Bustan neighborhood in Silwan town, to reach 98 houses, in an attempt to demolish the entire neighborhood, as part of its racist measures under the policy of ethnic cleansing.

Abu Diab stated that the targeted houses have existed for decades, most recently in 2000, calling for political, official, and international intervention in the face of the fierce occupation attack on the neighborhood and tightening its control over Jerusalem.

Al-Bustan neighborhood is located in the center of Silwan town and is adjacent to Al-Aqsa Mosque from the south and southeast sides. It is about 300 meters away from the southern wall, and extends over an area of 70 dunums, and is inhabited by about 1,550 citizens.

The Israeli occupation authorities have been seeking for years to demolish hundreds of housing units in the Al-Bustan neighborhood, and turn it into a “Biblical garden” in the interest of Judaizing projects and schemes, but the scheme has been postponed several times due to popular and public pressure, as well as the legal movement.

The story of Sheikh Jarrah, Al-Bustan neighborhood, Silwan and Batn Al-Hawa, and how the occupation authorities deal with them, reflects the nature of the Israeli judicial system, which overlooks the fact that the documents provided by the settlement associations are dubious and forged, and “sympathizes” with them to seize the homes of Jerusalemites while preventing Palestinian refugees from returning to their homes in Jaffa, Haifa and others.

Today, Jerusalemites are subject to approximately 33,000 demolition decisions, in exchange for the construction of hundreds of thousands of housing and settlement units, while about half of the residents of Jerusalem are displaced outside it because they are prevented from obtaining building permits, demolishing and stealing their homes and lands.
