Days of Palestine – Hebron

The Israeli occupation forces on Thursday closed Al-Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron in front of worshipers and visitors for 10 days, under the pretext of combating the spread of the coronavirus.

Sheikh Hefzi Abu Sneineh, the director of Al-Ibrahimi Mosque, told that the Israeli occupation’s decision to close Al-Ibrahimi Mosque will start at nine o'clock this evening for a period of 10 days under the pretext of combating coronavirus.

Abu Sneineh said that these claims are not valid and that the Israeli occupation is trying to deny Muslims access to the Mosque.

He stressed that worshipers and visitors are committed to all preventive protocols in place, in addition to the fact that the occupation soldiers deployed at the military checkpoints surrounding the Mosque for a period of time have not allowed more than 20 worshipers to enter the Mosque.

The Palestinian Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs condemned the decision. The Undersecretary of the Ministry Hussam Abu al-Rub told Anadolu Agency: "This decision is rejected, condemned and unacceptable, and we will not accept it."

He added that the mosque is supervised by the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs.

And Abul-Rab added, "The decision to close the mosque from the Israeli occupation constitutes an encroachment and an interference with the authority of the Palestinian government to supervise religious sites in Palestine."

He indicated that the ministry is following up everything related to regulating the entry of worshipers and the preventive and precautionary measures related to coronavirus.

Since 1994, Al-Ibrahimi Mosque, which is believed to have been built on the shrine of the Prophet of God Abraham, peace be upon him, has been divided into a special section for Muslims, and another for Jews, after a settler killed 29 Muslims while they were performing the dawn prayers, on February 25 of the same year.

The Ibrahimi Mosque and the old city of the occupied city of Hebron were listed by "UNESCO" in 2017 on the World Heritage List.

The mosque is located in an area under full Israeli control, but it is managed by the Palestinian Ministry of Endowments.
