Days of Palestine – Ramallah

Prisoner Maher Al-Akhras continues his open hunger strike for the 96th consecutive day Friday, rejecting his administrative detention amid a serious deterioration of his health condition.

The Israeli Supreme Court rejected on Thursday the prisoner's lawyer’s petition to release him and transfer him to a Palestinian hospital. Qadoura Fares, the head of the Prisoner's Society, considered the court decision an execution decision against the prisoner in view of the seriousness of his health condition.

On 23 September 2020, the Israeli Court issued a decision to freeze Akhras’s administrative detention in an attempt to break his strike. However, before a week, the Israeli occupation authorities (IOA) canceled the decision.

Akhras is being held in the Israeli Kaplan hospital and he suffers from severe pain all over his body, frequent cramps, loss of consciousness, difficulty in movement, blurred vision and weak hearing. Furthermore, he suffers from shortness of breath which is the most prominent symptom that has recently worsened.

Akhras, 49, from Silat al-Dhahr town in Jenin, is married and he is a father of six children and worked in agriculture before his arrest. He has been arrested several times since 1989 and spent about 4 years in the occupation prisons in aggregate.

The Israeli army arrested Akhras on 27/07/2020 and the IOA ordered his administrative detention for four months. He declared a hunger strike from the first day of his arrest.

Activists launched an electronic petition calling for the collection of signatures to demand the IOA to release Akhras.

They launched their online campaign under the hashtags #Save-Maher-Al-Akhras and #Freedom-for-Maher-Al-Akhras.

They published a link to the public campaign calling for the immediate release of the prisoner https://freemaheralakhras.com .
