World protests have been lately growing to reject Israel's attempts to annex occupied Palestinian territory, an expert reported to the UN Security Council on Tuesday.
According to a videoconference, the UN special coordinator for the peace process in the Middle East, Nickolay Mladenov, many countries in that region and in other parts of the world expressed their disagreement with Tel-Aviv's annexationist intentions.
Meanwhile, the UN continues efforts to resume a dialogue between all stakeholders, without preconditions, and in the interest of peace and a negotiated resolution of the conflict.
Mladenov also highlighted the call by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for the Israeli government to abandon plans to annex areas of the occupied West Bank.
Unfortunately, the special envoy said, the situation on the ground is quickly affected by the dramatic rise in Covid-19 cases in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and also in Israel.
The challenges of fighting against the rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in the West Bank and driving prevention efforts in the Gaza Strip are exacerbated by the end of coordination between the Palestinian Authority and Israel, the special envoy told the Security Council.
