Israeli occupation razes olive trees to build settlers’ road

Israeli occupation uprooted on Sunday about 250 olive trees in West Bank city of Qalqilia to build road connecting two illegal Israeli settlements.

Sources said that the planned toad is named Al-Nabi Elias and it would include the expropriation of 25 acres of Palestinian land — including a total 700 olive trees.

This land belongs to the Palestinian villages of Izbat al-Tayyip, Azzun and al-Nabi Elias, east of the West Bank city of Ramallah.

On Saturday, the Israeli occupation forces prevented dozens of Israeli activists from joining a nonviolent Palestinian demonstration against the land confiscations.

By Sunday, only a small group of Palestinians came out to protest the uprooting; therefore, they could not stop the Israeli uprooting of their trees.

The decision to build the road, which will serve settlers only, was made as part of a compromise with the Yesha Council, the umbrella organisation that governs Israeli Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.

However, to the text on the expropriation orders, paving the road is intended to “improve transportation between Nablus and Qalqilya.

The Palestinian landowners previously unsuccessfully petitioned the Israeli High Court against the plan.

Head of Al-Nabi Elias’ village council Raed Khalif reported Israeli claims that “those who will be able to prove ownership over the land will receive meagre compensation for the property they lost — which makes up an essential part of their livelihood.”

Meanwhile, he and all the Palestinians basically reject the principle of compensation, insisting that they must have their own land for themselves.
