The shooting came amidst increasing Israeli violence against the Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, mainly Al-Aqsa Mosque and the surrounding suburbs.

Palestinian and Israeli sources said that the shooter was a Palestinian man who was due to begin a prison term in an Israeli jail next week.

Eyewitnesses said that the incident took place near the Israel national police headquarters, where tens of Palestinians are being blocked, interrogated and tortured almost every day.

Medical officials said six people were also wounded in the attack. Police identified the assailant as a 39-year-old Palestinian from East Jerusalem.

A spokeswoman for the Israel Prisons Service said the attacker had been ordered by a court to start a four-month jail sentence next week.

During the last year, the Israeli occupation murdered at least 240 Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
