Days of Palestine, Brussels –The EU has condemned new Israeli plan to build 2,610 new Israeli settlement units in East Jerusalem.
Israeli occupation is called to “urgently reverse” actions leading to settlement expansion in East Jerusalem.
“This represents a further highly detrimental step that undermines prospects for a two-state solution and calls into question Israeli commitment to a peaceful negotiated settlement with the Palestinians,” the EU’s diplomatic service said.
A Palestinian expert revealed on Monday that the Israeli government had approved decision to construct a huge Israeli settlement south of Jerusalem.
Israeli Peace Now said on Wednesday that the Israeli occupation is to press ahead with the planned construction of 2,610 settlement units in Jerusalem.
The project has also drawn sharp criticism from the United States, with President Barack Obama on Wednesday telling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Washington’s deep concern over the proposed development. France also did the same.
In addition, the EU called on the Israeli occupation to end decades of settlement building in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, land which Israel seized in the 1967 war with the Arabs and on which the Palestinian want to build a future state.
According to international law, the Israeli settlement in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank is illegal. It has caused the breakdown of several rounds of peace talks supported by the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations.
The EU said that future EU-Israeli relations depended on how well the occupation pursued a lasting peace based on a two-state solution.
