Days of Palestine, Ramallah –Palestinian Authority (PA) sources revealed over Monday night that PA’s Abbas ordered probe into reports about planned Hamas coup.
According to the sources, PA President Mahmoud Abbas described reported announced earlier on Monday by the Israeli intelligence services Shin Bet suggesting a planned coup by Hamas in the occupied West Bank as “a grave threat to the unity of the Palestinian people and its future.”
Hamas officially denied the Israeli claims and said they were aimed at spoiling the “unprecedented atmosphere of unity” among all the Palestinian factions made up by the Israeli war on Gaza and the achievements of resistance during that war.
Shin Bet said that, along with the Israeli occupation army, it uncovered and successfully disbanded a Hamas cell based in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem. This cell, Shin Bet claimed, had planned to topple Abbas and take control of the West Bank.
Israeli occupation said that it arrested 93 Hamas members between May and August 2014. News about those arrests and their aim –thwarting Hamas coup plan– was released on Monday.
According to the alleged plan, Hamas members were run by leaders based in Turkey. They were to carry out attacks against Israeli targets in order to destabilise the security situation in the West Bank. Thus, it becomes easily for them to remove Abbas.
