DaysofPal- A birthday celebration for Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has drawn widespread attention and criticism after images and video circulated online showing a cake decorated with a gallows symbol, reportedly referencing support for the execution of Palestinian prisoners.
The event, marking Ben-Gvir’s 50th birthday, was organized by his wife and attended by several figures, including police officials, prison forces, and right-wing activists.
The cake reportedly bore the phrase “Congratulations to Minister Ben-Gvir… sometimes dreams come true,” which observers interpreted as a reference to ongoing political debates over legislation related to the death penalty for Palestinian detainees.
Footage shared on social media appeared to show the minister reacting enthusiastically to the cake, further fueling criticism from Palestinian commentators and rights advocates, who described the imagery as deeply troubling and reflective of broader political attitudes.
According to reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also contacted Ben-Gvir during the event to extend birthday greetings.
Amani Sarhanah, media director of the Palestinian Prisoners Club, said the incident should not be viewed as an isolated act but rather as indicative of wider trends.
“This is not about individual behavior,” she said in remarks to local media.
“It reflects clear orientations toward legitimizing the killing and execution of Palestinians.” She added.
Sarhanah added that such expressions have become increasingly visible in the context of the ongoing war in Gaza, arguing that they signal a normalization of extreme rhetoric.
Israeli affairs analyst Amin al-Hajj described the incident as a form of political signaling aimed at a specific domestic audience.
“Presenting execution as an achievement or aspiration reflects the use of violence as a tool to gain popularity among far-right circles,” he said.
“When private celebrations become platforms for political messaging, it suggests that such rhetoric is no longer confined to official institutions.” He added.
He further noted that the normalization of such imagery risks deepening divisions and reinforcing narratives that dehumanize Palestinians.
The controversy comes amid heightened tensions and ongoing conflict in Gaza, where international scrutiny has intensified over the humanitarian situation and conduct of hostilities.
Critics argue that political discourse and symbolism, such as that seen at the birthday event, contribute to a climate that escalates hostility rather than encouraging de-escalation.
Supporters of Ben-Gvir, however, have historically defended his positions as representing a hardline security stance amid ongoing security concerns.
The incident has sparked renewed debate over the boundaries between political expression and incitement, as well as the role of public figures in shaping societal attitudes during times of Israeli attacks.
